The Etiquette Guide for Attending a Symphony of the Hills Concert

We understand some first-time ticket-buyers might feel uncertain of expectations for attending a symphony concert. Please rest assured there is no “correct way” to enjoy the beautiful music we are all here to share.

That said, here are some answers to questions you might have that will make you feel more comfortable:

What should I wear?

Many concert-goers enjoy dressing up for a night out. Concerts are also social occasions where you can meet old friends and make new friends with shared interests. We suggest “business casual,” but you will see people in everything from shorts and jeans to dresses and suits. Don’t ever let your wardrobe keep you from attending.

Is it OK to send texts, record, or take video during the concert?

Video or audio recording is not allowed due to copyright law, and we ask that everyone silence their phones in consideration of other audience members.

However, we do encourage you to share selfies, check-ins, and social media posts before the concert and during intermission to let your friends know how much you are enjoying the show. Symphony of the Hills also maintains an active presence on all social media where you can comment and share your photos after the concert.

Use hashtags #SymphonyOfTheHills #TheHillsAreAlive

We are also experimenting with placing the evening’s Music Program online for you to access via a QR code posted in the lobby. It is appropriate to refer to the program on your phone during a concert.

That’s it!

If you have any other questions, please email them to info@symphonyofthehills.org.

We heartily welcome you to attend our next concert, and to consider becoming a Patron or Season Subscriber [LINK]. Kerrville and the surrounding Hill Country communities are fortunate to support a professional 75-piece orchestra, and we want even more residents to come out and listen to the great music we present.

When should I arrive?

Concerts begin at 7:30 p.m.

Doors to the Cailloux Theater lobby open at 6:30 p.m.

Doors into the auditorium open at 7:00 p.m.

Symphony of the Hills offers an informal wine and snack reception one hour before each concert. Plan to arrive any time within that hour. Lobby lights will dim when the concert is about to begin, giving you time to find your seats.

What is a Pops Concert

This format was popularized by The Boston Pops, with the orchestra performing a repertoire of “popular” music not normally considered part of the “classical” genre. Audiences might hear theme songs from their favorite TV show or movie, or a mix of tunes by a variety of non-classical guest artists. While we designate one concert every season as a Pops concert, most of our concerts contain a mix of classical and popular pieces.

How long is a concert?

Plan for a two-hour experience, including intermission.

When should I Clap?

The short answer to this common question is, “Whenever you want to show appreciation.” This can be as the conductor, concertmaster (principal violinist), or soloist takes the stage. Traditionally, clapping is withheld until the end of a piece with multiple movements, or musical sections. However, we have no problem with you clapping after an individual movement. We all love being appreciated, no matter when.
