CONDUCTOR’S NOTES
I don’t know if this happens to other people, but when I watch movies, I have to really concentrate in order to remember the music being used. The visual component of movies takes up most of my intellectual focus, and I can name numerous times when I did not remember that a popular tune was used as an underscore to dialogue or accompaniment to an action scene. Our Pops Concert this season features the great orchestral music that has accompanied some of the most popular films of our time. You will see titles on this concert by some of music history’s finest composers. They capture our hearts and minds by vividly connecting their artistry to the character or action. In a corollary to my earlier point, great movie music also allows us to see in our mind’s eye the character and action when only hearing the music alone!
Another amazing fact about film scores is that they have proven to be worthy as stand-alone concert works in the same way that opera and incidental music might remain more popular than the play or opera ever were. Think of Beethoven’s overture to the play Egmont – do many people know Goethe’s play today? Yet, Beethoven’s famous overture is one of the most popular of all symphonic concert works in the repertoire! Many composers set their most popular film/stage works as concert suites for this very reason. So, we celebrate one of the great American composers, John Williams, on the second half of this concert with the complete orchestral suite from Star Wars. Enjoy, and please pass the popcorn!
